Pinterest Tested: Bacon Wrapped Tater Tot Bombs

Oh boy, I was so excited to try out this recipe!! The original link had amazing photos, and the recipe looked fairly simple. And the flavor combination was definitely intriguing.

I mean, come on... tater tots topped with cheese then wrapped in brown sugar bacon?? HECK YES!

However (insert sad face here)... I don't think I'll ever be making this particular recipe again. Total Pinterest fail.

Tater tots before going in oven

To start, the tater tots are messy to put together, so be prepared for sticky fingers. The cheese square also tends to pop out from its bacon wrapper. Once the tots are placed on the cookie sheet, they look a bit neater and I had higher hopes that despite the long prep process, this dish would be worth it.

Tater tots after cooking
I was so, so wrong. Totally not worth it.

The cheese melted and oozed out from the bacon wrapper. So not only was there no cheese, but it melted across my pan and burned. The brown sugar combined with the bacon fat created a sticky, caramel-like substance that also melted and oozed across my pan and burned. When attempting to remove the tater tots, most of them crumbled into pieces. Only a few came off the pan looking even remotely like the original picture I saw.

Never, ever again. I actually had to throw my cookie sheet away, it was such a mess. And while I really love the idea of this flavor combination, I think the recipe would be much better served nacho-style. Perhaps cooking the tots, then topping with cheddar cheese, a bit of maple bacon, maybe even a drizzle of bbq sauce.

Hey, maybe I'll try it sometime!

But for now, test this recipe at your own risk. If you do try it yourself, let me know in the comments how it went for you. Until next time, happy cooking!

Pinterest Tested: Piñata Cake

If you've been keeping up with me this week, then you know I always make the Hubs a special birthday cake each year. He's kinda spoiled…

This year, I decided to make him a piñata cake that I found on Pinterest. This is the original link I followed, if you want to check it out: A Subtle Revelry: Piñata Cake.

I didn't change much about the cake, but I only used 1 box of cake mix instead of the two suggested. Since we've been traveling a lot, I didn't want the cake to go bad. This was the perfect size for 4 people to each have a slice, and then to have two pieces left over.

To start, bake your cakes! You can do this in oven-safe bowls, like me. Or, you can bake any shape you want too. Whatever floats your boat.

Cake batter about to go in the oven

I followed the directions on my box of mix, but the cake took a bit longer in the oven. I suggest keeping an eye on it, testing occasionally for doneness. Once done, I let the cakes cool and then turned them out onto a plate.

Scooping out the inside of each cake was fun! Be careful not to cut through your cake though. If you do go too deep, you can repair the tear with a little bit of icing.

Hollow out the inside of each cake

If you're super thrifty (like me!), you can save the cake filling for cake pops. These are very basic to make: mix together your cake filling with a bit of icing, then roll into ball shapes. Place on a wax-paper lined cookie sheet and freeze until hard. Then, one at a time, dip the cake balls into some melted chocolate and return to the freezer until hardened. See, easy peasy!

So, back to the piñata cake. After you're done scooping out the inside, ice the edge you've left and fill the hole with your favorite candy. I chose Snickers bars and peanut M&Ms for the Hubs.

Next, put the other half of your cake on top and ice it all. I like to do a thin layer of icing first, then refrigerate it, and then do the final icing. You can do it however you want. Oh, and I totally added some sprinkles to the top!

The Hubs looked a little disappointed when he first saw the cake… he's used to getting a more elaborate looking cake for his birthday. But then, he started to cut the first piece and he was totally surprised by what he found inside!

This piñata cake was fairly simple to make, and was a big hit at our house. Definitely a Pinterest success!

Have you tried any cool Pinterest cakes that you'd like to share? Comment below, peeps! And until next time, happy baking!

Fun Birthday Cakes

I really don't know how this tradition started, but a few years ago I began making The Hubs some unusual cakes. These weren't your basic, standard birthday cakes. They had to be special. Last year, I almost didn't bake him a cake because we were in the midst of packing up our household goods for our PCS to Germany. But The Hubs pouted, and begged, so I gave in and made him a cake.

See? SPOILED.

This year, I decided to get him good. I made a cake that looks perfectly ordinary on the outside… BUT once you cut into it, all these goodies come spilling out like a piñata. His face was priceless! I'm writing an additional post later this week about how to make your own piñata cake, so stay tuned for that.

In the meantime, I thought we'd take a look at The Hubs' cakes through the years:

33rd birthday - my first attempt at a "cool" cake

34th birthday, the 3ft long Snickers cake

The 35th birthday… we'd just taken our first trip to the Caribbean

Birthday #36: The Orange Monster
(Hubs' favorite color)

And last, but not least, this year's cake:

The surprise Piñata Cake… he looks surprised, doesn't he?!

Now, I know my cake making skills are not exactly professional or anything. But I love making these cakes every year for the Hubs. It's become our silly little tradition. Plus, he's spoiled.

What are your birthday traditions?

I'll be back soon with the instructions to make your own piñata cake. Until next time, happy baking!

Pinterest Tested: Manual Binder

Yep, it's that time again! Time for another Pinterest Tested moment…

This time, I tested out an organizational tip from Desiring Virtue. I've been organizing my office, which is full of papers and binders and all kinds of junk, everywhere. I had stacks of paper manuals that were particularly annoying. You know the ones I'm talking about… the pamphlet that comes with your crockpot, and the how-to manual that came with your printer.

You don't want to throw these items away, because you use them occasionally. But they are also a pain in the butt to store.

Solution! Take an old binder (or buy a new one if you don't have nay), and fill that binder with document protectors. Slide your manuals into the protectors, and viola! Instant organization, I love it.

I even separated mine into categories within the binder. For example, all my manuals for kitchen appliances are together. All my office equipment pamphlets are together. Etc, etc. You get my point, yes?

This pin was a rousing success! The binder of manuals now sits on a bookshelf in my office, easy to access any time I need it. I'm sure I'll be testing out more organizational tips over the next year or so. If you want to try some for yourself before I do it, check out my Pinterest board called Organize My Life. There are lots of ideas there.

Until next time my friends, happy organizing!

Pinterest Tested: Sheets in Pillowcases

This pin has been in the back of my mind for ages. Since our big move to Germany, I finally found the right opportunity to test this organizational tip.

You see, once the movers left, my sheets looked a little something like this:

Big ol' mess on the floor… such was life after the move. Stuff came out of boxes and was tossed into whatever room it would eventually belong in. Our new German home doesn't have any closets, only wardrobes. This presented a problem. Where was I to store my sheets and towels?

After much hair pulling, I decided to use the wardrobe in our spare room for my sheets. But I didn't want them to look all messy like they usually do when I fold sheets.

Hence, this fantastic pin about storing your sheets inside of their pillowcases. Brilliant.

Ta da! My sheets are all nice and neat, just the way I like it. This pin really does work. I like the easy storage. I like that I just pull out a bundle, and everything is together in one place. I especially like that my folding doesn't need to be perfect for this to work. It took a bit of getting used to, but I quickly got the new folding rhythm down.

I know a few of you have tried this pin at home, too. How do you like your new way of folding and organizing? Comment below, peeps!

Until next time, happy pinning!

Pinterest Tested: DIY Natural Face Scrub

In keeping with our chat yesterday (ya know, about my journey to all things natural?), I've got a great guest blog for you today. My niece has been on a journey of her own, looking for natural solutions to basic beauty issues. And she's sharing some of those tips with us, yay!

So here's Ivy and her all-natural facial scrub:

… I started looking on Pinterest for some great face scrubs, and I was immediately inspired by Homemade For Elle's honey and oatmeal facial scrub. I tried this scrub first, and ouch! It totally dried my skin out, and I hated how the whole oats felt.

From there I started researching different ingredients for natural facial cleansers, mud masks, etc. I liked the idea of oats because they exfoliate, but I definitely needed them ground up more. Crunchy Betty had a similar facial cleanser, yet totally different in several ways. On a side note she talked about giving the scrub a turbo charge with neem powder. I was like.... what is neem?! I have to know about this basic ingredient! It's amazing for your skin.

I began to look into neem powder, which is available no where near me. I substituted neem oil, which is one of the worst smelling things in the world. So I'll definitely be ordering neem powder at some point in hopes that it won't stink SO bad! The lavender, tea tree, and lemon oils I added did cut the smell though.

I was hooked by then, so I kept looking for more way to improve my scrub. I wanted a super scrub that would help with my black heads too. So I researched calcium bentonite clay. It's main function is to pull toxins from your skin and replace them with the nutrients in the clay, such as calcium. Once I tried a basic bentonite clay/apple cider vinegar mask I knew I was on to something, it rocks! So hippie problems, on my day off or in my free time I roam around natural grocers for hours looking at everything, googling it and seeing what I can do to use it in my everyday life. Crazy right? It's my new hobby.

After a couple weeks of trying to perfect my scrub, I posted on my page what I came up with! I added the lemon essential oil for anti-bacterial reasons, and because I have semi acne prone skin. This scrub is soooooo good for me personally that when I got 3 minor pimples, I was shocked! Then, my time of the month started and I realized why… normally I get big neck pimples (so gross), and this time they were just minor blemishes.

Here's the recipe if you'd like to try it for yourself:

5 drops lemon essential oil
15 drops lavender essential oil
15 drops tea tree essential oil
5-10 drops neem oil (this stuff is thick, smells awful and is amazing for your skin)
1 tablespoon bentonite clay
1 tablespoon honey (Raw is best, but I'm using up what I have and it works great)
1/2 cup oats coarsely ground (I put them in the food processor)

Oats in the food processor

Mix up all the ingredients (I do this in my food processor). I use the scrub every morning. Pour about a half dollar size amount in your hand, get it wet, and squeeze it in your palm to get a ballish clump. Then I scrub it all over my face and rinse. Using oil on your face sounds scary but after my adjustment (a few days) it made a HUGE difference. My skin is brighter, more even, and way less breakouts! If you try it out, please let me know how it works for you.

Finished scrub, waiting for use
I'm a natural mama when it comes to skincare and makeup now. I night moisturize with a combo of rose hemp seed oil and apricot kernel oil. Moisturizing with oil sounds scary, but it rocks! My face didn't have to work so hard to produce it anymore and it evens and brightens my tone. My daily moisturizer for morning is Brilliant by Younique, which is one of the products I sell through my Younique website. My skin has never looked better! It took a week or two (and a few mud masks) to detox from everything I've used previously, but that adjustment period was WORTH IT! No more spending a ton of money on cleansers that don't work for my troubled skin.

I hope y'all enjoyed this guest post today! I'm excited to try out Ivy's facial scrub as soon as I can. If you want to keep up with Ivy and her natural beauty tips, you can also follow her on Facebook. Until next time, my friends!

Pinterest Tested: Veggie and Black Bean Tortilla Casserole

You know how I love a good guest blog post, don't you? Well this week, my pal Sunshine has sent in a recipe she tested out for us. I've been told that this dish was a huge hit in her house. So if you like Mexican flavors, you should try this for yourself. I know I'm going to!

Here is the original recipe link: Cheesy Veggie and Black Bean Tortilla Casserole

And here is the recipe (with changes) that Sunshine tested and found delicious…

2 cloves garlic, diced
1/3 cup onion, diced
1 Tbsp EVOO
1 Tbsp white wine vinegar
Black pepper, to taste
1 medium tomato, diced
1 green chili, diced
1 cup crushed tortilla chips
1 large can black beans, drained
1 cup grated cheddar

1 cup cooked, seasoned for tacos ground beef (optional)

Pinterest Tested: Dandelion Fire

I know I've been gone for a week, and I'm super sorry. I fully intended to have several new posts, including a fun party appetizer recipe and a new post about London.

BUT. I've been sick all week.

Usually, even when sick, I can keep up with blogging. That's what laptops are for, right? Sometimes though, I have flare ups that knock me out and leave me sleeping 18 hours a day. Which is what happened this week.

I'm back now though, and I'm doing my best to catch up! Keep an eye out for several new posts coming soon. To commemorate my slide back to blogging, I tried out a Pinterest Tested moment with the Hubs on Saturday…

Nailed it??? NOT.

Ever since I saw this colorful picture of a flaming dandelion (left) on Pinterest, I've wanted to re-create that moment (right). New flash: I lit up half a dozen dandelions, and not one of them made pretty colors.

Sigh.

I guess not every Pinterest trick can work.

So that's all for now, peeps! Check back soon (like, tomorrow) for a new recipe. Until then, happy pinning!

Oil Pulling, Part 2

About 10 days ago, I started my new adventure of oil pulling. I promised to keep you updated, so here I am!

Every morning I wake up, and start my day with oil pulling. At first, this was rather disgusting. Because I'm using coconut oil, it was solid at room temperature. This sensation of solid goop wasn't pleasant, but the oil quickly melts after being swished around for just a minute.

As you know (having read my first post, of course!), I wasn't able to do the full 20 minutes in the beginning. Now however, I've got this! By day four, I could do the entire 20 minutes of swishing with no problem. I still feel a little queasy when I spit the oil out (after my 20 minutes), but it's getting better.

If you're attempting oil pulling yourself, I suggest finding a task to complete while you're swishing. I've been cleaning my kitchen every morning. This works for me, I hardly notice the swishing now. I am having issues with clenching my jaw a little too tight, but I think that's just me. I grind my teeth at night too, ha. When I notice the tension, I simply relax my jaw a bit and everything is fine.

The first few days of pulling, I didn't notice much difference in myself except for a clean feeling in my mouth when finihsed. After 10 days, I've noticed quite a bit more. For example, I definitely have more energy! I noticed this side effect just a few days ago, and I'm extremely excited about it. As someone with an autoimmune disorder, I pretty much walk around tired all the time. I'm not sure if the oil pulling is boosting me or if this is psychosomatic, but I'm happy to take advantage of the benefit either way.

I've also noticed some changes in my sleep pattern. I often have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. I guess I'm a bit of an insomniac. Again, in the past few days, I am most definitely sleeping better and feeling well-rested when I awaken.

Now that I've gotten past the icky feeling of putting oil in my mouth every day, I'm loving the changes I feel. Over the remaining 20 days of my challenge, I'll keep you updated! I'm tracking a few other supposed benefits, so we'll see if they're true or not.

Until next time, peeps!

Oil Pulling, Part 1

Over the last several years, I've become much more focused on my health. Specifically, on what goes into my food, and what my body might be absorbing. These changes are difficult to make all at once. I'm sure you know what I mean! It's hard enough to keep a New Years resolution, much less a huge lifestyle change.

So, I decided to pick one thing at a time, and change that. Once I've mastered the mini-goal, I move on to the next one. Hopefully, all these mini-goals will add up to make a big difference.

If you follow my Facebook page (if you're not, you totally should!), you know I started some smaller goals when the Hubs was deployed. I take my vitamins everyday, after I did some careful research on which ones will make a difference for me. I actually get the most benefit from coconut oil, which isn't technically a vitamin, but I take it nonetheless. If you're looking for a great company to get vitamins and supplements from, check out Swanson Vitamins, I love their site.

Of course, I've also been walking my dog everyday (though I've slipped occasionally there), and reading my devotions everyday, among a whole host of other things. I even started making my own brown sugar scrub, which I LOVE.

Brown Sugar Scrub

My new goal is to try oil pulling for 30 days. If I find it benefits me, then I'll continue the practice indefinitely.

What exactly is oil pulling? I know you're wondering.

From what I understand, oil pulling originated in India, and has been practiced for a super long time. I know that's not very scientific of me, but I'm just starting to learn about this technique. Supposedly, the oil pulls toxins and bacteria from the mouth, which are then spit out. This can improve such conditions as bad breath, bleeding gums, insomnia, migraines, acne and other skin conditions, ulcers and stomach conditions, nerve diseases, and arthritis. AND, this is supposed to be a natural teeth whitener as well.

Your oil choice makes a difference, with most articles recommending either sunflower or sesame oil, with an option for coconut oil.

Because I always have unrefined coconut oil on hand, this is what I'm using in my experiment. I began with a tablespoon of oil. If you've used coconut oil before, you know that it's a solid consistency at room temperature. Placing that in my mouth was a little scary, but after the first few seconds, the coconut oil responds to the heat in your mouth and melts.

And then you just swish, swish, swish! You should do this for 20 minutes, but I'm finding it difficult. On day one, I only managed 5 minutes. Today was day two, and I swished a little more than 10. I'm building up to that 20 minute mark.

I haven't noticed an appreciable difference yet, though my mouth does feel clean after the swishing. Upon spitting out the oil, I rinse very well with water and then move on with my regular morning routine. Quick Tip: If you're using coconut oil like me, don't spit it into your sink because the oil will solidify again in your pipes and clog them up. Spit into the trash instead.

I'll let you know how the rest of this experiment goes! Have any of you tried oil pulling? Has it worked for you? Please comment and tell me about your experiences.

Pinterest Tested: Brown Sugar Scrub

I've been curious about making my own bath products for quite a while now, but never seemed to have the time. I mean, first you need to find a recipe, then buy the ingredients, then make it, then test it…

But I found that this process was totally worth it!

After some recent medical issues, I started doing a little research. Your skin absorbs so much of what you put on it everyday - deodorants, lotions, creams, makeup, bath soap, etc. Most of these products contain harmful chemicals, and we don't even realize it! I could give you my long spiel here, about organic foods and natural cleaning products, and a whole host of other things… but I won't.

Just know that chemicals are bad, peeps. By making different choices, one simple choice at a time, we can decrease our exposure to these chemicals and hopefully make the world a better place for future generations. I've started my own journey down this path, picking one item to change at a time.

With that in mind, I was hard at work looking for a homemade bath scrub, minus as many chemicals as possible. And eureka, I finally came up with my perfect combo!

Brown Sugar Scrub

I scoured Pinterest for weeks, tried a few scrubs, but eventually created my own combination. Here are some of the people I took inspiration from:

The Pinterest Project

Simply Southern Mom

Homemade Ginger

To get started, this is what you need:

Brown sugar, white sugar, coconut oil, olive oil, Vitamin E, and vanilla. The basic recipe is quite simple: 2 parts sugar to 1 part oil.

Start by mixing together your oil and sugars. I use ½ cup coconut oil and ½ cup olive oil. The coconut oil is much more solid at room temperature. I like the contrast in consistency, I think it creates a nice scrub texture.

Oils

I use 1 cup EACH of brown sugar and white sugar. You can use all of one type of sugar, but I prefer the combo. You might also try raw sugar, as well. I think this would make the scrub extra exfoliating, and I may test it one of these days (*see my update below! Thanks to Abigail Austin Photography, this combo has now been tested). If you try this yourself, please comment below and let us know how it goes.

Once the sugar and oils are combined, you could definitely stop right there and have a great scrub. However, I also add a teaspoon of vanilla (smells delicious!) and 4 capsules of Vitamin E (just cut the capsule open and squeeze the liquid into your mix). You could also purchase straight Vitamin E oil, which wouldn't require the additional task of opening the capsules.

That's it! The recipe makes about 2 medium-size jars (this greatly depends on the type of jar you are using). I've been using the scrub for a while now, and I LOVE it. Your skin feels so soft after stepping out of the shower. I especially like how well it helps the dry skin on my feet and hands.

I've also added raw honey to the scrub before (about ¼ cup), and this makes a nice addition. Play around with the recipe, and discover what works best for you.

This also makes an excellent gift for birthdays or Christmas, or any occasion. Decorate your jar with ribbon and a label for a polished look. Heck, decorate the bag to match (credit for the decorations here go to my pal, Becky!).

I hope you enjoy the recipe. Please comment below with any tips you may have for fellow readers. I'll be back with more posts soon, my friends! I've included the full recipe below.

UPDATE: A fellow blogger and great friend of mine, Abigail Austin Photography, tried this scrub at home and was nice enough to share her results with us. This is what she had to say:

"I just finished trying your Brown Sugar Scrub, and I loved it! My skin feels soft, and I smell pretty.

I tried the recipe spontaneously without a trip to the grocery store, so I substituted brown sugar with raw sugar. The grains did not absorb the oil, so my texture was different than yours. I added more white sugar and the oils. As a scrub, the larger granules of the raw sugar did well exfoliating, but they were harsh in the ratio I used. A tablespoon of raw sugar would give the extra exfoliation power.

I'm very happy with this recipe, and I can't wait to make it again. A natural, chemical free scrub that leaves skin this moist is a must-have for any beauty queen in the north where heaters zap all the moisture. Thanks for this great recipe, Our Army Life!"

Brown sugar scrub with raw sugar

From Abby's test, I suggest only adding raw sugar for a little exfoliating boost, perhaps a tablespoon. Stick with either brown or white sugar for the main portion of your base. Thanks for the tips, Abby!

Pinterest Tested: Dutch Oven Bread

Today, I spent some time with one of my new neighbors (all day actually!), and we tried out several bread recipes. You see, Jen (my neighbor) offered to teach the rest of us plebeians how to make real bread.

Like, from scratch.

Obviously, I couldn't resist!

Especially when I saw how simple some of the recipes can be. We made several loaves of French bread  (from one of Jen's recipe books), and we also made an artisan Dutch oven loaf. You can find the recipe at FrugalLivingNW.

Artisan, dutch oven bread

This was the easiest bread, ever! Yesterday, Jen mixed the dough and left it to rise for 18 hours. Yes, you read that correctly. 18 hours. I know that sounds like forever, but let's be honest, peeps… it's not like you actually have to do anything to the bread during that 18 hours. You just let it sit and work it's magic.

When I arrived at her place this morning, the bread was already done with the first rise:

Bread after first rise

Jen quickly shaped the dough into a ball (no kneading!), and left it to rise for a few more hours. Then, we simply plopped it into the dutch oven and baked.

Seriously, peeps. That's it.

Viola! Jen shows off our bread baby

So simple, so easy, and soooooo delicious! This loaf was HUGE, even after we split it in half. We snacked on it for a while, dipping it in various oils, slathering it with butter, and using it as a base for bruschetta mix.

The crust is crunchy, but not too thick. The inside is a fabulous texture, both light and moist (we used bread flour instead of all-purpose, so this likely helped). I sliced my half into sandwich bread for the Hubs, and we ate the remainder with our dinner.

If you've always wanted to make bread, but you were afraid to try, then this is the recipe for you. I've already started looking into a Dutch oven for myself, just so I can make this, ha!

Hopefully, I can convince Jen to guest blog some of her other bread recipes for us soon. Until then, happy baking, my friends!
